PCCP

Capable Kids and Families

Capable Kids and Families is a program designed to support families who have a child with special needs. Program components include: weekly networking/playgroup meetings, an accessible playroom, and an extensive therapy equipment loan program. A resource library is also available to families and professionals. (See details below.)

The program serves children ages zero to three years.

Networking/Playgroup Meetings

Weekly meetings are held to offer parents an opportunity to network with each other. They share concerns, successes, ideas, and resources with others who truly understand. Children are welcome!

Accessible Playroom

Our playroom has been designed to offer opportunities for children of all abilities. The Somotron ball pool has soothing vibrations and soft lights that provide a relaxing experience. The equipony simulates therapeutic horse back riding. The toys provide play activities on many levels.

Therapy Equipment Loan Program

Capable Kids and Families believe that providing parents with the appropriate tools to implement follow-up therapy activities will result in children making greater developmental gains. The program has purchased more than 1,700 pieces of therapy equipment for use by families. Families are encouraged to consult with their child’s therapist for equipment recommendations. Equipment is available to address concerns in the following areas: gross and fine motor, speech and language development, sensory integration, ability switches and adapted toys, visual and auditory processing, cognitive development and problem solving, positioning, and mobility.

Resource Library

Resources are available for checkout by families and professionals. The books, CDs, tapes, and kits cover a variety of topics, including the following: language development activities, sign language, oral motor activities, sensory integration, strengthening activities, fine and gross motor activities, visual skill development, massage and yoga, inclusion, sibling issues, parenting children with special needs, early intervention, intervention dictionaries, IEPs, autism, Fragile X Syndrome, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and PKU.
