Walking For Fitness

Walking Trail Signs

Fitness walkers in Rolla have a helpful new resource to aid them in measuring their progress.  Fit Phelps provided funds to place markers every quarter mile on walking paths around town.  Walkers at Ber-Juan and Green Acres Parks merely need to note the sign where they enter the trail and can easily track their mileage as they pass other signs.  The signs feature the 5:30 logo, which reminds us that five servings of fruits and vegetables and thirty minutes of activity each day contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

The 2006 Fit Phelps Walk the World was the largest AARP walking program in the State of Missouri with over 400 participants.   AARP has agreed to partner with us for this year’s walk in September!

Jeannine Headrick and Sue Bustion enjoy the Senior Wellness Walk at the Acorn Trail on June 3, 2008. Phelps County Regional Medical Center and Fit Phelps sponsor the walks, on Tuesdays at 8:00 a.m. The group begins at the pavilion in Green Acres Park.

Senior Wellness Walks

Walkers enjoyed the first of four Tuesday morning Senior Wellness Walks at the Acorn Trail on June 3, 2008.   Phelps County Regional Medical Center and Fit Phelps sponsor the walks.  The group met at the Green Acres pavilion at 8:00 a.m. on consecutive Tuesdays.

The city parks department does a great job maintaining the Acorn trail, which facilitates a fine walking experience.  The green canopy provides shade on much of the path.  Helpful quarter-mile markers let walkers keep track of their progress.

Senior Wellness Walks will return, by popular demand, in the fall of 2008 during Walk the World.
